What Kirkus Said

13.07.08 - Getting Some Book Cover

Woke up this evening after a long nap, powered up my laptop and prepared to launch into an evening with ‘Itch’. Decided to cruise by my inbox – not usually a good idea before writing, as I often never get around to the writing (so many emails, so little time, so little in common with a blank Word page).

Anyway, point is, there was a notification from Kirkus in the inbox. They’d reviewed ‘Getting Some’.

The Kirkus Indie reviewer called ‘Getting Some’ a ‘fun, entertaining read’ but they also said that it was ‘a bit shallow’. Cue sound of deflating balloon.

These latest reviews leave me a little puzzled. Clearly, most readers enjoy the book, but it’s also clear that they consider it ‘light’ fare – more whipped cream than ice-cream, more frosting than cake. In other words, read it at the beach, not in the bathroom. (Anybody else takes the books they can’t bear to put down into the toilet with them?)

I’m kinda happy that the reviews are, for the most part, positive. But so far, the only ones that are knocking my socks off, making me swell with pride (and relief!) are the ones from readers themselves, not the professional reviewers. The latter are kind of ho-hum about ‘Getting Some’.

You can decide for yourself what you think by reading the Kirkus review here.

And now it’s back to ‘Itch’.

  1. To me that sounds like the way it should be. The books everyone loves the critics hate. The book the critics rave over is probably only so-so. Of course, that’s probably not true all the time, but if the critics hate a certain movie, I’ll probably like it if it’s one I would like at all.

    • Hoping that holds true for ‘Getting Some’. Not many things worse than a review that pretty much rates your book as ‘unremarkable’. Hoping it won’t turn readers off of giving it a chance.
